Psy-Sound — Binaural Beats Audio Editor

Delphi desktop app for creating binaural beats and affirmations. Technically strong product that failed due to zero marketing. A lesson that development is 20%, traffic and people are 80%.

The Idea

Not a player of pre‑made “brain beats,” but a full editor: build your own programs, modulate frequencies, mix tracks, export however you like.

Context of the Era

2009: hype around binaural beats, but marketing beats code. Desktop still alive, but the market already pivoted to web and mobile stores.

Business Insights

  • Product without marketing = hobby. Channels matter more than perfect features.
  • “Heavy desktop” lost to lightweight distribution even then.

What Was Built

  • Generators for beats, noise, envelopes; track mixing.
  • Real‑time monitoring; export to WAV/MP3.
  • Profiles (sleep/focus/relax), presets, smooth envelope transitions.

Science was debatable, effect subjective. But in 2009 it was the “biohacking for ears” hype.

Outcome

Product done. Marketing — zero. Competitors built the same, loudly and at scale. Money and fame went to those who knew how to buy traffic.

Lessons

  • Code is 20%. The rest is audience, message, channels.
  • For consumer products, marketing should start before code.
  • The cash register is the most honest feedback. Silence is an answer too.
